Last night, the NBA’s postseason began. The Western Conference 2022 Play-In Tournament began with the Minnesota Timberwolves hosting the Los Angeles Clippers. Minnesota hosted LA in a battle for the seventh seed. This single elimination game determined who would play the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round. Towards the end of the season, the Clippers were hot, and they won three of the four meetings with the Timberwolves, this season.
However, the Minnesota Timberwolves had home court advantage. The Timberwolves are a young and energetic team. Historically, the Timberwolves have struggled. During the Kevin Garnett years, the Timberwolves became a perennial playoff contender. In seven straight playoff appearances, KG’s Wolves lost in the first round. But when 2004 came, Kevin Garnett won the MVP, the Wolves earned the top seed, and went to the Western Conference Finals.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been the NBA’s worst team since 2004. They didn’t make the playoffs again until 2018, when they lost in the first round to the Houston Rockets. This year, Minnesota had only their third winning season since 2004. Earning the seventh seed, they played the Clippers for the seventh seed, winning a close game. Patrick Beverley spent four years with the Clippers, but demanded a trade after a contract dispute. Beverley was key in the Wolves’ win, so he celebrated in a big way.
