Mainstream hip hop figures are finally beginning to pay attention to what people here in Los Angeles already knew, there is some talent out here. Yes, there are talented hip hop scenes all over the world, but living in and representing LA as a DJ means a lot of the talent comes right here. Since Hip Hop Vibe’s the new hustle, it’s the new outlet.
There isn’t a single Los Angeles rapper getting attention right now who doesn’t deserve it. But, there are others, such as AV LMKR who is the ultimate underdog in the Los Angeles hip hop scene. Just like the godfather of gangsta rap, Eazy-E, AV is a native of Compton, but he invented “sagg muzik.”
Apparently, “sagg muzik” is popular, seeing how AV LMKR experienced a lot of success with his Thugged Out mixtape. The project featured appearances from many other LA-area artists, Young Sam, Kurupt, Glasses Malone, and more. California outside of LA is represented with Mistah F.A.B. appearing on the tape.
With his recent records, AV LMKR has bridged both the old and the new generations of Los Angeles hip hop. “Run Me My Money” was a very big hit for AV, but the remix made people pay attention. The remix featured guest appearances from Audio Push, Joe Moses, Genasis, TeeCee 4800, and Kurupt. Kurupt also appears on AV’s other single, alongside Snoop Dogg, “Call You A Bitch” and both of his singles in 2013 have gone viral.
Fans have their reasons for saying what they do and the critics have their right to ask if Kendrick Lamar is king and to praise Nipsey Hussle for Crenshaw and Dom Kennedy for Get Home Safely. All of these guys have worked hard, including Game and Glasses Malone, and their position was earned, not handed to them. But, the job of the DJ is to break an artist and with the internet being the current medium, any DJs hip to the game should use their outlets to break artists.
AV LMKR has already made a major impact on the game and many already know about him and for those who do, this question is for them. Is AV LMKR the next leader of the “New West?”
