Hip Hop Vibe’s Rookie of the Year: Meek Mill

Some may argue Meek Mill deserved this distinction a year ago. Those who feel that way need remember Meek Mill’s official debut album came out this past October. With strong debuts from 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar, it was difficult choosing one new artist.

But, when it comes to overall impact and popularity, Meek Mill had the game on lock. As a new artist, Meek Mill expanded well outside of his brand. Initially, Meek Mill’s success served as a testament to Rick Ross’ ability to pick artists. Now, Meek Mill’s success shows how talented he is.

Meek Mill started things off with his first official single, “Amen,” which featured Drake and Jeremih. Early in the year, Meek Mill came under fire when Philadelphia pastor, Jomo Johnson, used the song as a way to take aim at Meek Mill. Showing he was no pushover, Meek Mill confronted Pastor Johnson and moved forward. Maybach Music proved to be a roster full of superstars and Meek Mill helped drive this point home with his official rookie campaign.

Anthems proved to be Meek Mill’s calling, as he followed “Amen” with “Burn,” which featured Big Sean and was another major success for him. Currently, fans can hear more of Meek Mill through his latest single, “Young & Gettin’ It,” which features Kirko Bangz. Between his chart-topping album and his record-setting mixtape, Meek Mill made a big impact as a new artist, for which he is Hip Hop Vibe’s Rookie of the Year.
