Had 2 Chainz decided to release his debut album any year aside from 2012, he would have easily walked away with “Rookie of the Year” honors. However, with 2 Chainz releasing his debut album the same year as Meek Mill, Kendrick Lamar, and many others, the competition was stiff. But, the year of 2012 was heavily impacted by 2 Chainz.
After enjoying a breakout year in 2011, 2 Chainz prepared to warm the world up for his debut album, Based on a T.R.U. Story. The year started for 2 Chainz when he appeared alongside Teairra Mari on her “U Did That” single. From there, 2 Chainz appeared on Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap,” along with Kanye West’s “Mercy” and other G.O.O.D. Music projects.
Momentum for 2 Chainz was strong, so when “No Lie,” featuring Drake, was released, it only added to what had already been built. Despite the strong showing from 2 Chainz, there were many other rookies who went hard. But, Hip Hop Vibe still had to mention 2 Chainz, as he worked with everyone from Juicy J to Kreayshawn to DJ Drama in 2012.
