In the early 2000s, hip hop showed its staying power when there were groups of rappers from Memphis, Atlanta, and Houston all rising to stardom. Previously, it was believed only rappers from New York and LA had the juice. Before that, the figures here in LA had to prove themselves to be forces.
Project Pat definitely helped solidify Memphis’ position in the rap game. In 2001, he released his sophomore album, Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin. This album spawned the legendary single, “Chicken Head.” Another popular record off the album was “Gorilla Pimp.”
As 2014 is on the horizon, Project Pat plans to drop Mista Don’t Play 2. Before doing all of this, Project Pat decided to revisit the commercial peak of his career. He released the music video for the “Gorilla Pimp” track, twelve years after the song debuted.
