No doubt, J. Cole has done his thing is helping put North Carolina on the map and the city of Fayetteville is a place to pay attention to. But, Greenville produced the first rapper to put North Carolina on the map in Petey Pablo. In 2001, Petey Pablo released the “Raise Up” single.

Peaking at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2001, “Raise Up” was the first single off Petey Pablo’s debut album. Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry was the title of the album. The single was notable and the North Carolina anthem to people well outside of hip hop.

Several North Carolina sports teams used “Raise Up” as their anthem songs during this period of time. Seeing how North Carolina is where this grind picked up at, it made sense to pay homage with Petey Pablo’s “Raise Up” as the Wednesday Throwback. The Diary of a Sinner album went gold behind the success of the single.
