DJ YRS Jerzy’s Wednesday Throwback: Mobb Deep ft. Lil’ Kim – “Quiet Storm (remix)”

Mobb Deep Quiet StormBy DJ YRS Jerzy
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

The year of 1999 was big for hip hop and Queens made sure to represent. Mobb Deep released their fourth album, Murda Muzik, in 1999 and the first single off their album was “Quiet Storm.” Following the breakout success of “Quiet Storm,” Mobb Deep put out the official remix with Lil’ Kim.

Sampling both Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “White Lines (Do It)” and also Smokey Robinson’s “A Quiet Storm,” the track did well on Billboard’s urban charts. This period of time was also when tensions were high with Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown. Lil’ Kim used the track to send a loud message to her rival.

Although released in the early spring of 1999, “Quiet Storm” had plenty of success during the summer. Overall, Lil’ Kim was having a dominant year and this record solidified it. Mobb Deep is more street than commercial, but “Quiet Storm,” especially the remix with Lil’ Kim, had them receiving more mainstream attention and this track is Hip Hop Vibe’s latest Wednesday Throwback from yours truly.
