Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, few people could touch Jermaine Dupri and the So So Def movement. When Jermaine Dupri started his label, he signed Da Brat and she went on a run. In 2000, Da Brat released Unrestricted, her third studio album, and “What’chu Like” with Tyrese was the breakout single.
Released in late March, “What’chu Like” became a summer anthem for Da Brat and it helped further establish Tyrese. A big hit within hip hop circles, Da Brat enjoyed a lot of commercial success with this single. The song became one of the biggest songs of her career.
Since summer is almost here and people are already hitting up the beach, it made sense for Hip Hop Vibe to revisit Da Brat’s hit. She has a lot of new music in the works and 2014 looks like a good year for Da Brat. Regardless, this week’s Wednesday Throwback belongs to Da Brat and Tyrese for “What’chu Like.”
