Ten days ago, hip hop celebrated its 40th birthday. Who ever thought hip hop would take it this far? There are countless media outlets that exist solely to cover this culture and it’s impressive. In light of this celebration, Hip Hop Vibe is kicking off a celebration, “Hip Hop Appreciation Week,” thank K.B. Tindal for that.

One of the first hip hop hits was “Planet Rock” by Afrika Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force. This single was the title track off Afrika Bambaataa’s sophomore album, which was titled Planet Rock: The Album. Back in the spring of 1982, the song ended up taking over the charts.

Including samples from Kraftwerk and Ennio Morricone, “Planet Rock” goes down in history as one of the most-iconic songs in hip hop history. “Planet Rock” was released under the legendary independent record label, Tommy Boy Records. So, this week, this is the Wednesday Throwback because this track inspired more than hip hop.
