On The Rise: Jogu

JoguBy Carlos Cureno
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Important to overall American history is Chicago, known historically as the “Second City.” There are two reasons for this, with the first one being due to New York City. Meanwhile, the other reason is due to the fire wiping the original Chicago out.

Jogu hails from Chicago, which is his city and he is representing for it to the fullest. He launched his new album, Just My Thoughts, with a single called “23,” for the obvious reasons. Most Chicagoans take much pride in the Michael Jordan legacy being built in their city.

Recently, Jogu spoke to Hip Hop Vibe for our latest On The Rise interview edition. The conversation saw Jogu speak on the Bulls of both the Michael Jordan era and the impending Dwyane Wade era. During the interview, he would also explain the motivation behind his music.

Read the entire interview below:

How do you feel about the Midwest rap scene, especially Chicago? In all honesty, I’m kind of disappointed. I’m disappointed because the lyricism is missing. Chicago has had some amazing lyricists; such as Twista, Kanye, Psychodrama, Snipaz, Do Or Die, Crucial Conflict, Common, Lupe Fiasco, etc. They were amazing story tellers and their music related to what you were going through.

What difference do you bring to the music that is already out? I bring my own sound. I bring social awareness to the masses ( that seem largely unaware). My lyrical commentary speaks for those who feel that they are or were unheard.

Can you tell us more about your album, Just My Thoughts? Just My Thoughts is an album that conveys messages of progression, confidence, love, social awareness, adversity & resilience, and celebration.

Why did you choose that title for your projects? I chose Just My Thoughts becaause each track is my perspective about the subject matter

Growing up in Illinois, what was it like to be able to claim an icon like Michael Jordan your own? Michael Jordan is EVERYTHING to Chicago. The Bulls were fortunate to have the GOAT to be their (franchise) player.

How did you feel about the Bulls trading Derrick Rose and signing Dwyane Wade? I felt that a change, on both sides, was necessary. I think Dwyane Wade was a great signing. I think he compliments Rajon Rondo very well. The Chicago Bulls are putting pieces around Jimmy Butler, to solidify the fact that he now, is their franchise player.

When it comes to your own work, what comes next? Just My Thoughts is my next album coming out. I have a few collaborations with other artists on Destructive Minds Ent.

Where can the people connect with you on social media? Anyone can connect with me @DMEJogu on all social media (SoundCloud, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat)
