Before releasing his sophomore album, Wale made several changes in his career. At the time, Wale was disgruntled and displeased with his promotion at Interscope Records and he left the label. Signed to management under Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, Rick Ross soon worked out a deal to add Wale to Maybach Music.
Initially a lyrical artist, Wale toned down on this portion of his style upon joining forces with Rick Ross. Hardcore fans criticized the sharp change in style, but Wale transformed into a mainstream force. Wale released Ambition in 2011 and received much critical acclaim for it, despite fan reaction.
Now, Wale is preparing to release his third album, The Gifted. When Wale first signed with Maybach Music, he said his third album would come in 2012. But, after the MMG press conference, it was clear his album would be out in 2013. The release date mirrors that of Self Made 2, June 26, 2013.
