At a time when there weren’t many black people on film and television, Tyler Perry took that risk. His film and television properties employed black people on both sides of the camera. Despite his great business practices, Perry faced a lot of backlash.
Many people criticized Tyler Perry’s content and the criticism came from the black community. Famed and acclaimed filmmaker, Spike Lee, wrote his content off as “coonery.” Still, Tyler Perry worked, eventually building his company into a billion dollar enterprise.
Tyler Perry worked independently, eventually partnering with TBS, and then with OWN, before finally joining BET, and taking an executive position with the company. This has been a great move for BET, as Perry has many hit shows, “The Oval” among them. A clip from a recent episode has gone viral, though, but for the wrong reasons. There is a scene where a man has his hand in a private place and he forces a woman to watch, eventually throwing it at her.
Now, fans on Twitter are attacking Tyler Perry, personally, even calling him “sick.”
