The Academy bans Will Smith from attending Oscars and other Academy events for 10 years, after he slapped Chris Rock, at last month’s Oscars

Will Smith banned from Oscars for 10 years after slapping Chris Rock

Today, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences met to decide what Will Smith’s punishment would be, for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, a few weeks ago. That came after Rock made a “GI Jane” joke on stage, regarding Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett’s bald head. Rock apparently didn’t know that Pinkett had a hair loss condition. Smith soon yelled “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth!” from his seat. The end of the night went on to awkwardly have Smith win the Oscar for Best Actor, for “King Richard.” However, Smith did apologize to The Academy then.

Smith’s punishment has just been handed down, as it is a 10-year ban from attending the Oscars, according to TMZ. This applies for in-person and virtual events. This was confirmed by the Academy’s President and CEO, after a vote was held.

“The Board [of Governors] has decided, for a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards. During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers, and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented. We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”

A day after the Oscars, Smith apologized to The Academy again, as well as Rock. Several films have since been put on hold since the slap, such as “Bad Boys 4” and “Fast and Loose,” on Netflix. Smith also resigned from The Academy.
