SXSW was supposed to have their annual conference/festivals this month from the 13-22 but last week, they announced that their events will be canceled as a result of the worldwide coronavirus outbreak. Stars such as Megan Thee Stallion, Big Boi, Rico Nasty, and more were set to perform along with a good roster of speakers for their conference lineup.
Many events are still going on as they will be rebranded as ATX but for the people who booked their trips strictly for SXSW events, they are in for some bad news. According to SXSW’s website, they stated that they don’t issue refunds under any circumstances. They went on to explain that “Any and all payments made to SXSW are not refundable for any reason, including, without limitation, failure to use Credentials due to illness, acts of God, travel-related problems, acts of terrorism, loss of employment and/or duplicate purchases.”
According to the SXSW’s Co-Founder and publisher of the Austin Business Journal, Nick Barbaro, badges purchased can be used for another year. Many simply want refunds for this year due to the huge inconvenience. SXSW attendees booked badges, flights, and also hotel/Airbnb reservations. Canceling SXSW was understandably done to avoid the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus but not issuing refunds was a very classless move on their part. Coachella is also another festival who has been affected by the virus as theirs has been pushed back to October.
Luckily for everyone who is still in Austin, they can attend the ATX events, such as Boosie’s Badazz Music Syndicate at Tellers on March 21. 100,000 people are still expected to be in the city.
