Tonight, the Seattle SuperSonics fans are reliving the old days, and reminding the NBA that they want their team back. For eleven years, there have been no Sonics. It’s odd, because in the 1990s, they were consistently one of the league’s top teams.

Led by Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, the Sonics owned the West, playing the 72-10 Chicago Bulls, in the 1996 Finals. While they lost, they put forth a classic effort, coming back from 3-0 down to lose the series 4-2. Retrospective, Gary Payton says they could have won it all.

Since their retirements, Gary Payton has remained more vocal, pushing for the Sonics to return. Early on, it was hinted the Memphis Grizzlies would relocate in 2010, which clearly never happened. In 2013, the franchise came close to coming back, via the Sacramento Kings’ almost relocation.

But, tonight, the Seattle SuperSonics, of the 1990s, came back in the form of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, in the promo for the Seattle Seahawks’ game against the Minnesota Vikings, on ESPN. The quick cameo from Shawn Kemp, where he says “that’s right, Gary,” is owning Twitter, right now.
