An anti-looting rally has popped off in the Latina neighborhood of Dyckman, a ‘borough in uptown New York City in Washington Heights. The heavily Dominican area has had its reputation of racism. Some black people have known to be denied entry into certain clubs and other subtle discriminatory situations have taken place in the area.
Dyckman has become the new mecca for street basketball performers much like the EBC [Entertainers Basketball Classic] in Harlem back in the early 80’s and throughout the 90’s where a roster of legendary street legends and notable players would come from all over to compete. Many celebrities in the Hip-hop culture could be found on the courts betting on their favorite teams back in the day such as Fat Joe, Jay Z, Russell Simmons and Diddy. With its heavy hip-hop influence, the Dyckman area is full of culture, color, and raw talent.
As the country currently feels the weight of the infection of racism being exposed, prideful residents of this area have taken a stance against their neighborhoods being looted and destroyed. Many of the people that reside in this uptown area have lived there for years and years, and many of the businesses are small Mom & Pop stores that are truly cherished as well as lounges and bars that have been a major part of the neighborhood’s culture.
With that being said, a video was shared that was said to be used to incite negativity and to discredit the passion of the people in the community. The Bronx had just suffered a night of riots and looting and this is the reason that they decided to unify and protect their neighborhoods.
Some Dominicans stood in solidarity on social media about the protests that are taking place, while a few others showed a totally different side as they gather assumptions that black people are the looters and express their disdain. A few tweets can be found:
“Dyckman strong!!!! We will not be defeated during this looting of NYC. Not in our hourse!!!! Residents, store owners, and first responders come together to protect our streets and kill racism!! We are family, race, creed, or color will define us!!!!!”
