Before the “Empire” season two finale, Lee Daniels revealed a major character would die in the finale. In the episode just before the finale, Freda Gatz (Bre-Z) learns Lucious (Terrence Howard) killed her father (Chris Rock). This leads to Freda shooting Jamal (Jussie Smollett).
After taking a bullet for Lucious, Jamal briefly regained his father’s respect. By the next episode, he was already demanding him to sing when he turned Hakeem’s (Bryshere “Yazz” Gray) wedding to Laura (Jamila Velazquez) into his wedding. He married Anika (Grace Gealey).
When “Empire” returned for season three, Lucious was focused on the launch of his streaming platform. He wanted Jamal to sing, but he choked and Nessa (Sierra McClain) stepped up. As Jamal went to sing for the anti-violence movement, he choked again and admitted to being scared, garnering him sympathy from Twitter.
