On “A Star is Born,” Jay-Z accurately described how Nelly dominated the game. He described his debut, comparing it to a “hurricane.” After his splashy debut, he slowly faded from the spotlight.
Nelly hit, hugely, with his Country Grammar debut album, led by the title track. Immediately following this came his single, “E.I.,” and then “Ride Wit Me.” Then, Nellyville saw his career peak, led by “Hot In Herre” and “Dilemma.”
Last month, Nelly dropped his eighth album, Heartland, but his biggest headline is coming from him hugging Ashanti, during Verzuz. For his contributions to hip hop, BET is recognizing him, though. At the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards, he is receiving the “I Am Hip Hop” award.
