Last year, urban film and hip hop-inspired programs took over mainstream entertainment. The summer of 2015 saw Straight Outta Compton become the best-selling film of all-time. Critics and people close to NWA pointed out how only certain stories were told.
Strangely enough, Michel’le didn’t warrant a single mention. This was odd, seeing how she was a part of World Class Wreckin’ Cru, Ruthless, and Death Row Records. Not to mention she was Dr. Dre’s girlfriend and mother of his child, later being the same for Suge Knight.
Michel’le has shared her story on “R&B Divas” on TV One, but she teamed up with Lifetime to tell the full story. For the obvious reasons, her film, Surviving Compton, wasn’t Straight Outta Compton, but critics loved it just as much for its honesty. Now, it is nominated for Best Long Form Original at the 2017 Writers Guild Awards.
