Officially, there is proof the industry is not necessarily needed to be successful in the rap game. Tyler, the Creator proved this when he released Goblin to both critical acclaim and viral success, winning ‘Best New Artist’ at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Later that year, however, Mac Miller showed everyone how it was really done.

Hailing from Pittsburgh, on the heels of Asher Roth and Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller would dominate the same mixtape circuit. But, when his work caught the attention of the major labels, as Asher Roth did in 2009 and Wiz Khalifa in 2010, he chose to remain independent. Mac Miller made this decision because he wanted to prove artists did not need a major label.

After speaking with 2 Chainz last week, MTV sat down with Mac Miller for full details on how he made it. During the second episode of MTV’s “This Is How I Made It,” Mac Miller explained how he became one of the biggest names in the game. The episode aired yesterday at noon.
