The female rap game has been in shambles ever since the release of Lil’ Kim’s The Naked Truth. Since the release of her album, no other female rapper has come with new music. Last year, however, Lil Wayne would sign New York femcee, Nicki Minaj to his Young Money label. Unlike other crews, Wayne sought to find misfits to sign to his label. Before the addition of Minaj, he had signed Drake to the label.
For most of last year, Lil Wayne held the spotlight and after the summer, he focused on turning the spotlight over to Drake. Early this year, Wayne went to prison and he made Drake into the leader. It has since been his job to introduce Nicki Minaj to the game. She has been quite successful as Ludacris and Usher called on her for a rap verse. Quickly, Nicki has become the focal point of the rap game.
Last year, Lil’ Kim was supposed to stage her comeback, but those plans fell through. Her single, “Download,” was expected to become a hit, but it would be a flop. Because of this, the attention quickly left Lil’ Kim and would be inherited by Nicki Minaj. From the start, Nicki Minaj pointed to the likes of Kim and Foxy Brown as her inspiration. She got a lot of her sexy outfits from the outfits they wore during the 1990s. Minaj went as far as to say she wanted to have relations with Foxy Brown.
Because of her unique style, Nicki Minaj has found herself as the target of a lot of female rappers who do not have nice things to say. Nearly every major femcee has had something negative to say about Nicki Minaj, but she has yet to respond. Lil’ Kim has now become the latest female rapper to go at the Young Money rising superstar. Recently, she was performing in Queens and she made fun of the trademark blond wig worn by Minaj.
