After just two months of marriage, Hollywood screen writer Lena Waithe and her wife, Alana Mayo, have separated. The two, who’s dated for three years released a joint statement confirming the end of their relation.
“After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” they said in a statement to PEOPLE. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
News of the split comes as a surprise after Waithe revealed that the two had secretly gotten married in San Francisco Back in a November appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Waithe told the host how she and Mayo had a spur-of-the-moment ceremony at San Francisco City Hall.
“We went to the courthouse and got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust,” Waithe explained at the time. “It was her idea — like all good things are — and she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there,’ and I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.”
Waithe has always spoken highly of her partner, especially during her most recent press tour for ‘Queen and Slim’. She credited Mayo for keeping her grounded as her fame and profile in Hollywood grew.
