For years, Game was the only Los Angeles-area artist to debut and then maintain a successful career. In 2008, the “New West” movement began to gain much attention in the hip hop media. Jay Rock emerged as the leader, calling Ice Cube out for his album title, I Am the West.

Jay Rock caught the attention of the hip hop world for calling Ice Cube out. Their minor war of words ended and Jay Rock released his debut album last year. His label-mate, Kendrick Lamar, would also release an album in 2011. Section.80 was met with strong reviews and propelled Kendrick Lamar into superstardom.

Kendrick Lamar soon caught the attention of Dr. Dre and was signed to Aftermath. Work began on good kid, m.A.A.d. city, which came out two days ago. The album has been met with strong critical reviews. Now, the official projections for good kid, m.A.A.d. city were released and he is expected to sell 200,000 copies in his first week.
