The “New West” has gotten off to a fast start early in 2013. YG is currently celebrating the strong results of his Just Re’d Up 2 mixtape. Meanwhile, Tyga is gearing up for the release of his second album under Young Money, Hotel California. But, it was Kendrick Lamar who exceeded expectations in 2012.
Kendrick Lamar paved his own way in the game by recounting the stories of his life growing up as a good kid in Compton. Living up to the name, Kendrick Lamar titled his debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city. Meeting up with Game led to a co-sign that led to Dr. Dre signing him and then his entire Top Dawg Entertainment label finding a home at Interscope Records.
“Swimming Pools (Drank)” was the second single to come from Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city, but was his first single to hit mainstream radio. In the fall, Kendrick Lamar released his debut album and it went gold. Now, in addition to his gold status on his album, Kendrick Lamar can celebrate his “Swimming Pools (Drank)” single going platinum.
