Jay-Z has officially become hip hop’s first billionaire, after Forbes calculated his wealth, and business assets

Twenty-three years ago, Jay-Z took business into his own hands, and put his debut album out, independently. With Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke, Jay-Z founded Roc-A-Fella Records. The success of his debut album led to a partnership with Def Jam.

Soon, business ventures branched out into liquor, clothing, and low budget films. It became clear Jay-Z wasn’t just the talent, he was also the businessman. The rapper was soon leveraging his fame for business deals, taking over as Def Jam’s CEO.

Jay-Z left Def Jam, altogether, to create Roc Nation, and the race to become a billionaire was on. There was stiff competition from Dr. Dre and Diddy, but Jay-Z won out, in the end. This morning, Forbes has officially credited Jay-Z as a billionaire, tallying all of his business ventures, with his cash and properties.
