Last month, Irv Gotti returned to the headlines with comments about everything, whether it involved him or not, over the past few years. Irv Gotti is best-known for his run on top of the game, as the head of Murder Inc. Records. The run was filled with hit records and abruptly ended. A high-profile feud with 50 Cent helped in the depletion of his movement.
During his interview with MTV’s RapFix, Irv Gotti discussed hip hop, as a whole. While there are several new movements, Irv Gotti said hip hop needs Def Jam. Cash Money Records is currently on top of the hip hop world. Still, Gotti said hip hop is not hip hop without Def Jam and he volunteered to help return the label to former prominence.
After Irv Gotti volunteered to be the CEO of Def Jam, he also nominated Chris Lighty, one of his rivals, for the job. However, his comments made their way onto the headlines of several hip hop media outlets. Given his history with federal law enforcement, Def Jam would likely shy away from naming him their new CEO.
Russell Simmons, the founder of Def Jam, openly supported Irv Gotti’s bid for taking over the label. Simmons said he loved how assertive Irv Gotti has been about wanting to take over the label. The Def Jam founder agreed his label needs someone who cares to guide the label. In 2007, Jadakiss signed with Roc-A-Fella Records, which virtually dissolved in 2008. After the Roc-A-Fella demise, Jadakiss officially became a part of the Def Jam roster.
Having trouble releasing his own music, Jadakiss agrees with Irv Gotti’s statement and he, too, supports him in his bid to become the president of the label.
