Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Music is called the universal language, but hip hop has become even more the universal language. Poetry is the root of the rap element of hip hop, but many assumed it died a few years ago. This is not the case, there are a lot of people like Skeet Da Yung Poet that are keeping poetry in hip hop alive.

Last summer, Skeet Da Yung Poet talked to Hip Hop Vibe about the S.D.Y.P. movement and his new music. It has been a year and a lot has changed, which has brought about changes to the upcoming project. One of the biggest changes has been Skeet expanding the roster of the S.D.Y.P. label.

A year later, Skeet Da Yung Poet is still working and Hip Hop Vibe caught up with him this morning. Conducting an interview with Skeet Da Yung Poet, Hip Hop Vibe talked to him about the new projects he has going on. His followers on Facebook and Twitter have seen him visiting schools and Skeet discussed this.

Read the entire interview below:

What’s new within the SDYP Movement? First off, I want to say S.D.Y.P The Movement is not an local organization. Our aims are global, something like Universal Music Group, but more powerful and getting more involved with the communities across the globe. In May, we dropped our first compilation project an Anthology/book titled A Mother’s Day Special, in which it is distributed on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and all other major outlets. Besides that, we’re just working. Artist doing music, poets and authors working in the literary field and entertainment, models doing more photo-shoots. We’re hungry right now and if you don’t know who we are yet, soon you will.

You’ve been doing your thing, making appearances at school and such, what message are you trying to pass along to the youth? Most of all, I would like pass on to the initials “S.D.Y.P,” in which they stand for Success, Determination, Youth, and Prosperity. This is the message I want to pass to the youth, adults, and elderly. It is never too late or too early to chase your dreams, you write your own success story, you must have the ambition to see your dream come true, and finally unity is the key to it all. I just want everyone to come together as one.

How does it feel to go from being a kid and admiring people to the one being admired by kids? It’s a great thing, those are things that keeps me pushing as a leader, artist, author, and more. One of our youngest and newest members of S.D.Y.P The Movement sixteen-year-old, Tasia Hawks, out of Jacksonville, North Carolina. She messaged me on my fan page and she said “Hey Skeet, I used to see you all the time in Myrtlewood and I just want to say I been looking up to you with my poetry and singing career. Also, I did a project on you in my class on famous poets that inspire me.” A student from Norwood Elementary calls me to let me know that he was inspired by my speech and performance at his school. It inspired him to write a poem for his mother and she loved it and then he read it to me. Those are the things that keeps Skeet Da Yung Poet ticking, a sixteen year old spending her time to Google me and do research on me for a project, and a elementary student being inspired to write a poem by me.

On the music front, you have a new project in the works, can you tell us about that? We spoke months ago about me releasing my album, It’s Love Affair, well I’m still working on it, and still not sure if I want to give it to everyone as a mixtape or album. Besides that, I’m working on more singles with producers like S Dot, Jon Dixon, and more up-and-comers. Meanwhile, I am working on pushing out some work from various artists under my movement.

You have two new singles you are hoping to soon put out, what should the people expect out of those? Something different, as I plan to bring poetry up on the same level as R&B and hip hop, in which I believe poetry is the root of all music and, most of all, life. The track, “Why I Love You,” dropped July 1, 2013 on iTunes, Spotify, and all other major outlets was simply a woman questioning her man’s love. Me, as a man, letting her know that I love her, and explaining why I love her. Now, this single, “Not Your Average Man,” speaks for itself, as it is just me letting the world know that I’m not your average man on all levels. Both of these tracks I know men will be able to relate to and some will hate, and the women will most definitely love it.

When will the music videos for the singles be released? Actually, this is something I have been pondering on, but I’m thinking 2014 is when I’m going to start giving the world more visuals of Skeet Da Yung Poet. It will be something different for sure.

SDYP is a multi-faceted company, can you talk about the record label branch? As I said earlier, our aim is global, but we have artists, producers, models, and more in a variety of states like North Carolina, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and many more. Everyone is working in all areas independently and as a team. Soon, we will be flooding the streets of many states with singles from various artists, flyers, and more. Even if singles don’t sell like we want, we will build a bigger a brand. Everyone will soon know who is S.D.Y.P The Movement one way or another. Just know that we are working.

Which artists do you have the most faith in right now and what do they have coming? I have faith in all of my artists, but I will have to say Chox-Mak is working on a single, the S.D.Y.P. anthem “Succeed.” Thunder is working on a single, “Somebody.” Tasia Hawks is working on two singles, “Pretty Hustle,” a youth S.D.Y.P. anthem, and an album. Jones A Poet soon will be releasing his single, “Frootloops with the Marshmallows.” Mz-Am soon will be releasing her single, “The Bucket.” Anisa Lanae’s single, “Demonstrate,” is dropping within a few days to week, and there’s many more, just too many too name .

Will you do a compilation project with your artists? Yes. I plan on doing compilation singles, albums, and mixtapes in the near future.
