Since the days of NWA, Los Angeles has shown independent artists how to make themselves known in the game. NWA independently released albums before they landed their label deal. The platform originally laid by Eazy-E allowed Dr. Dre to reach new heights with Death Row Records.
There was a major decline in Los Angeles hip hop, despite the best efforts from Game, but things turned around in 2011. Much of the credit to this turnaround goes to both the Odd Future and Top Dawg crews. Both outfits released independent albums that gained mainstream attention.
Ab-Soul is a member of Top Dawg Entertainment and he released his Control System album. The album is his sophomore effort, on the independent scene. “ILLuminate,” which features Kendrick Lamar, is a standout track on the album. Life + Times caught up with Ab-Soul and he “decoded” this record.
