For years, fans have waited for Tupac Shakur to return and reclaim his position in the rap game. In 1996, the controversial rapper was murdered. With the murder being unsolved, there were many questions surrounding the overall situation, leading to sepculation. Most speculation has led to many believing Tupac Shakur never died, possibly hiding out to avoid trouble with law enforcement.

Tupac Shakur did not return to life in 2003, as many expected, but he did briefly return for Coachella over the weekend. There were rumors of Dr. Dre bringing Nate Dogg back to life, via hologram, for a performance at Coachella. But, these rumors were quickly overshadowed when Tupac Shakur finally returned, performing “Hail Mary” and “2 of AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” with Snoop Dogg.

Those who were not able to be at Coachella 2012 to witness the moment have been all over the internet, watching the footage. MTV caught up with the man who brought Tupac Shakur and Nate Dogg back to life, Nick Smith. Sitting down for an interview with MTV, Nick Smith explained how Dr. Dre helped with the details and how he put the hologram of Tupac Shakur together.

Read an excerpt of Nick Smith’s interview with MTV below:

“We worked with Dr. Dre on this and it was Dre’s vision to bring this back to life,” said Nick Smith, president of AV Concepts, the San Diego company that created the hologram. “It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life.”
