Say what you want about Fresh Off The Boat actress Constance Wu, just make sure you acknowledge how much dedication she puts into a role she actually cares about. Wu, who’s often been described as a diva and difficult to work with, just wants to be challenged with the movie roles she’s passionate about. Case in point being her recent turn as stripper in the critically acclaimed Hustlers. The film featured her as a struggling single mom named Destiny. Her character dances at the strip club to make ends meet. She joins Jennifer Lopez’s character, along with a group of other dancers, in a revenge scheme against Wall Street workers post the economic recession.
Appearing on the Kelly Clarkson Show Wu revealed that she went undercover and worked at a strip club in preparation for the role. The 37-year-old told Clarkson she was serious, racking up $600 her first night. Clarkson in disbelief asked what Wu did at the strip club.
“I’m not lying! I made $600 my first night,” Wu recalled. “I was not being funny, and it was not funny. I put fake tattoos on my neck, changed my hair.”
She revealed that she gave lap dances to strangers. It helped her understand the dynamics of performing in that kind of environment.
“You can’t duplicate the first time you walk into a club and say, ‘Hey, I’d like to have a job here,’ and then you go work that night,” she added of the experience.
