As much as hip hop has gone commercial and gotten away from the social topics from which it was built, some rappers have kept it as close to the core as possible. One name in particular comes to mind, Common. It’s ironic that Common would be the most-discussed mainstream rapper.
Common has the biggest song out with “Glory (Selma),” made in unison with John Legend. The song was used for the Selma film soundtrack and ended up winning Common an Oscar. As expected, Common has been on top of the world ever since.
Arriving in New York City this week, Common made his rounds with the media and talked to Hot 97. In the interview, sitting down with Ebro, Peter Rosenberg, and Laura Stylez, he discussed the Selma film. Indulging a little, Common also spoke on receiving calls from his exes, Erykah Badu and Serena Williams, after his Oscar win.
