Out of nowhere, Common and Drake began exchanging disses late in 2011. Three years had passed since Common released an album. His last album, which was experimental, anyway, was met with mixed reviews, when his albums usually are met with all-positive reviews. Common was determined to get things back on track with his next album.
Meanwhile, Drake was continuing his run, which originated on the mixtape scene and carried over as he released his debut album. Momentum for Drake was at a high when he released Take Care. But, after the album was released, the project was met with mixed reviews. Many felt Drake was too soft with the album, as he is also known for singing.
A month before Common released his album, he released “Sweet,” which led many to believe the song was directed at Drake. In prior weeks, there were rumors of Drake dating Common’s ex, Serena Williams. Many felt Common’s song was inspired by both Drake’s buzz and his relationship with his ex. Common said the song was simply for hip hop, something Drake was not buying.
Early last month, the feud between Common and Drake peaked with Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’,” which featured Drake dissing Common. Later in the week, Common freestyled over the track, removing French Montana’s verse. On his verse, he calls Drake out by name, leading many to believe an all-out war of words was going to begin. However, Common praised Drake in an interview a few days later and Drake revealed he was no longer going to feud with Common.
During the Grammys, Common said the feud was officially over and admitted he and Drake met up.
