There was a brief period of time when young Chicago rapper, Chief Keef, appeared to be the next big thing. Chief Keef had been releasing independent singles and mixtapes for some time. By 2012, his only claim to fame was a strong working relationship with Soulja Boy, who had returned to the internet as his primary outlet.

However, Chief Keef would become a viral sensation once he released “I Don’t Like,” which was freestyled over by countless rappers. As a result, Chief Keef’s Back From the Dead mixtape was a viral sensation. Soon, Chief Keef received co-signs from Waka Flocka Flame and other big names, while Birdman and Young Jeezy made moves to sign him.

Ultimately, Interscope Records would sign Chief Keef. Unfortunately, this is when things fell apart for Chief Keef. Twitter posts would lead many to believe he dissed Lupe Fiasco and was involved in Lil Jojo’s death. A huge backlash led to Interscope Records considering dropping him from the label. Now, Chief Keef has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for a probation violation, as he fired a firearm with The Fader and did not obtain his GED.
