Not sure if its on purpose or just a coincidence, but “Empire” has a lot of influences from Philadelphia. First, Lucious (Terrence Howard), the main protagonist and his family is from Philly. Then, Bryshere “Yazz” Gray, who plays Lucious’ son, Hakeem, is a native of the city.
Fellow Philadelphia native, Bre-Z, joined the “Empire” cast in season two, debuting in the premiere. She was cast as Frank Gathers’ (Chris Rock) daughter. Her storyline is based on Lucious having Frank killed in prison and signing Bre-Z to the Empire label.
This morning, Bre-Z stopped by “The Breakfast Club,” where she talked to DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne Tha God. Sitting down for an interview, Bre-Z explained how she joined the “Empire” cast and her career before making it in music. Prior to this, she was a barber for the likes of Akon and many others.
