Ryan Coogler is one of the most respected directors in the movie industry. It appears that one bank teller didn’t recognize him at all a few months ago, due to a him wearing a mask, sunglasses, and a beanie.

According to TMZ, Coogler attempted to slide a note to the teller, where he explained that he wanted to withdraw $12,000 quietly. For this employee, this was unfortunately viewed as a bank robbery attempt. Police were soon called to the scene, and Coogler was temporarily put into handcuffs. Two others were also in handcuffs, who were outside waiting for the “Black Panther” director.

This incident reportedly occurred at a Bank Of America branch, in Atlanta. Police obtained the note that Coogler gave to the teller, as it read “I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.” The transaction also reportedly triggered an alert, on the teller’s computer, which gave the impression that the bank was being robbed.

Police soon owned up to the fact that this incident was a mistake, and shouldn’t have happened. They pointed at the BOA employee taking action, who ended up being identified as a pregnant Black woman. When everyone was released, Coogler wrote down the badge numbers of every officer at the scene.

“This situation should never have happened,” said Coogler, in a statement to TMZ. “However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.”
