Last night, the 92nd annual Oscars took place in Los Angeles as “Parasite” dominated the show as it took home four awards. We also got to see amazing performances from Janelle Monae, Eminem, Elton John, and more. One huge question of the night at the Dolby Theatre though was Blac Chyna’s appearance on the red carpet and even attending the show in general.
According to TMZ, Chyna’s rep said that she blames racism for people wondering why she was in attendance. Keep in mind that Chyna just does some reality TV and is not involved in film making. The rep added that for Chyna, the Oscars appearance should’ve been a “magical and dream-fulfilling moment for that turned into a demeaning instance of “black lash,”
Chyna thinks she was deserving of attending the Oscars because she contributes to the entertainment industry with her reality show and being a black woman who “finds inspiration in supporting her friends, mentors, and other talent that has helped provide a blueprint for her career.” The rep tried to make a point that Chyna being there doesn’t make a difference from others who attended who weren’t nominated or involved in the film industry.
“Whether it be the fact that she is a reality star, a single mother, or the inevitable reminder that she was a former stripper,” said Chyna’s rep. “It does nothing to change the narrative that just maybe the Oscars indeed are ‘so white.'”
Chyna further clarified her appearance by saying that she was with a music producer but was able to get invited on her own. Many people don’t know Chyna for ever taking an interest in film or being around others involved in that industry so the confusion of her appearance is valid. Black people also wondered why she was there. This is not systematic racism.
