During his days as a rapper, one knock against Jay-Z was being unable to build other stars around him. From day one, Memphis Bleek was touted as the second coming, but many only associated him as Jay-Z’s sidekick. When Beanie Sigel was signed, many felt he could rise, but he also came up short. However, Roc-A-Fella Records’ in-house producer, Kanye West, was able to become a platinum success.

Kanye West became the face of Roc-A-Fella Records during Jay-Z’s “retirement” and was the head of his own label, G.O.O.D. Music, at the same time. As Kanye West rose to become one of the top emcees in the game, his label lacked another star. Veteran emcee, Common, was signed to the label and Pusha T was added. Kid Cudi enjoyed some mainstream success, but did not rise to become the type of star Kanye West did.

Big Sean, who released his debut album last year, has finally gained stardom. MTV News caught up with Big Sean in New York City last week and he spoke on how he plans to elevate his career. Working with Kanye West, Big Sean said he has been in the studio with the likes of Jay-Z and Nas. Given him being Kanye West artist and Kanye West starting out as an artist under Jay-Z, Big Sean said he has to rise to become bigger than both of them, overall.
