Depending on which era a person grew up in, Benzino is known for different things. But Benzino has a legacy that is worth mentioning. Benzino went from being a local Boston rapper to being the co-owner of The Source, once hip hop’s most influential publication.

Benzino had a successful career long before this, though. It was his time with Almighty RSO that led to him meeting Dave Mays. While the two were fast friends, Benzino wasn’t a part of The Source until 1994. According to interviews, Benzino didn’t make any money from the publication until 1999.

In 2005, Benzino and Dave Mays were removed from The Source, and they launched Hip Hop Weekly in 2006. The early 2000s saw Benzino turned into the villain of hip hop. At the time, Eminem was becoming the biggest name in music. During this period, Eminem had his biopic, 8 Mile, which was a box office success. This was when Benzino launched his attack on Eminem, involving The Source, which led to a decline in popularity with the company.

Benzino resurfaced in 2012 as a part of the “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” cast. During the 2014 reunion show, Benzino got into a fight with Stevie J, one of his best friends. This led to Benzino’s exit from the show. He has since divested from the publishing industry and moved into the restaurant business. For over a decade, Benzino has lived in Atlanta. Recently, Benzino sat down with B High, speaking to him about The Source, 2Pac, his daughter, Coi Leray, “Love & Hip Hop,” J. Prince, and getting shot.
