Originally, Jay Rock was expected to bring the Los Angeles hip hop scene back. In 2010, the Top Dawg rapper rose to fame when he called Ice Cube out over his I Am the West album. Jay Rock introduced the “New West” and became a frontrunner, alongside other members, Terrace Martin and Nipsey Hussle.

In 2011, Jay Rock prepared his official debut, but he found himself playing second fiddle to label-mate, Kendrick Lamar. Working with Game and co-signed by Snoop Dogg, things appeared set for Kendrick, as opposed to Jay Rock. Through Kendrick Lamar, the entire label landed a deal with Interscope Records and there has been no looking back.

Ab-Soul had a trail-blazing year in 2012, releasing his Control System album. Met with critical acclaim, Ab-Soul made headlines when he voiced his support for Chris Dorner. One of the first crime stories of 2013, Chris Dorner set out to murder every cop he felt was corrupt in Los Angeles. Vlad TV talked to Ab-Soul and he explained his reasoning for supporting Chris Dorner.
