Toronto has become The New Mecca of Hip Hop

While hip hop originated in The Bronx, the impact has been global. Hip hop caught on with fans around the world, leading many to want to become a part of the movement. The result of this was hip hop scenes emerging in Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, and other cities. In recent years, the Miami hip hop scene has been among the most-prominent.

Miami has been popular because rappers from other regions have been going to South Beach to record. The influx of rappers, such as Fat Joe, Lil Wayne, and Diddy, led to Rick Ross eventually becoming the biggest rapper in the game. The overall popularity of the Miami hip hop scene also breathed new life into the hip hop scene north of the border.

In 2009, Lil Wayne proved to the world Young Money was a legitimate record label when Drake was added to the label. Initially an actor, Drake was originally from Toronto, and he mentions this in every rhyme. When he realized getting signed was easier said than done, Drake hit the mixtape scene, eventually becoming very popular in 2009. Lil Wayne was the most-popular rapper out in this period, so it made sense for Drake to sign with his label.

Drake has gone on to become one of the biggest rappers in the game, now preparing his third studio album. However, there are many other talents from the Toronto area gaining prominence. Among them is the popular group, The Weeknd. While there are many rising talents in Toronto, there are many rappers in other areas, going to Toronto. Former Maybach Music affiliate, Pill, is teaming up with Toronto-based R.K.E. Promotions to launch his The Epidemic Tour in Toronto.

Rappers, such as Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and Meek Mill all have shows planned in Toronto over the next few months. Now, rappers are finding more reasons to soak in the culture of Toronto. In years past, this trend happened, with rappers migrating to Los Angeles, then Atlanta, then Houston, and then to Miami. The trend is continuing and now Toronto is becoming to go-to city for rappers, both for the newcomers in the area and the established veterans.
