A great number of rappers are married, with Jay Z having the most-prominent marriage. Seven years strong, they have proven matrimony can work in hip hop. There are several other high profile hip hop relationships and, of course, VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop.”
However, hip hop has continually been about rappers boasting the single life and multiple women. The previously mentioned, Jay Z, is well-known for his 1999 single, “Big Pimpin,'” which is all about the single life and multiple women. Then, there is Eminem’s “Superman.”
Going into this year, several new hip hop romances were revealed. In the early part of 2015, Wale, a popular rapper on MMG, opened up about his broken engagement. Losing a baby with his fiancee and his rising fame was too much and he decided to chronicle this chapter of his life with “The Matrimony (Making Plans),” featuring Usher.
While Wale is known for such records as “Clappers,” featuring Nicki Minaj and Juicy J, he decided to explore the concept of marriage. On this song, Wale talks about him wanting to eventually find love, settle down, and get married. But, this is something difficult to do when living the high life in hip hop and Wale tackled the topic, head on, possibly creating a new trend.
As much as hip hop is about music, it is about the high life and doing things in style. Few things are as stylish as a wedding and there are countless lavish weddings boasted on television. On the movie, Scarface, the “Push It To The Limit” scene features Tony Montana (Al Pacino) marrying his girlfriend, Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer) in a very expensive and lavish wedding and this movie is a hip hop favorite.
It is possible that a new trend is beginning in hip hop when it comes to marriage and hip hop is flashy. This means there could by many extravagant weddings to be broadcast, such as Yandy and Mendeecees’ wedding from this past May. But, not everyone can afford lavish weddings and have the support of a television network and they still deserve to have a stylish wedding.
