Should Diggy Simmons do Rap Beef?

Due to the duration and the popularity of “Run’s House,” many are having trouble watching Diggy Simmons grow up. Seventeen-years-old, Diggy Simmons decided to follow in the footsteps of his father and brother, becoming a rapper. In a hip hop game saturated by pretenders, Diggy Simmons was a breath of fresh air, as he was not afraid of being himself. Currently, Diggy Simmons is enjoying the success of his “Do it Like You” single and preparing to officially release “88.”

Over the weekend, Diggy Simmons made headlines, as he had a song, “What You Say to Me,” leak on the internet. The song is a blatant diss aimed at J. Cole, who finally released his debut album last fall on Roc Nation. There has been a lot of hype surrounding J. Cole, but he has gotten under the skin of the young Simmons. On a number of his songs, J. Cole has name-dropped Diggy Simmons and claimed to have slept with both of his sisters.

When the song leaked, Rev Run defended his son, referencing how many times J. Cole name-dropped him and the statements he made about Vanessa and Angela. The following day, Diggy Simmons did an interview and J. Cole was brought up. During the interview, Diggy Simmons called J. Cole a liar and said he did not care if J. Cole responded to the diss track, as he was standing up for his family. Understandably, a brother is going to defend his sisters at all costs, but Diggy Simmons has gone out of his way to prove he is not like the other rappers in the game.

The downfall of Diggy’s older brother, JoJo Simmons, was his need to be “tough.” However, when JoJo Simmons began his career, there was no one dissing his older sisters, so Diggy Simmons’ diss record is admirable. But, Diggy has acknowledged the fact he is a role model and he said he wants to be a positive influence on his fans. Those who look up to Diggy have obviously heard the song, which is way out of character. The downfall of most emcees is when they act out of character, such as Jay-Z following the release of Nas’ infamous diss record, “Ether.” Usually calm and collected, Jay-Z was noticably angry and it showed on his attempted diss records.

Many times, the best revenge is with success, as J. Cole, if he wanted to do harm, simply wanted to take Diggy off his came. If Diggy could have continued releasing his clean music and then drop a subliminal diss at J. Cole, he would have gotten more recognition than going after J. Cole the way he did. Despite his efforts, most hip hop fans have still sided with J. Cole in this potential beef. But, as previously stated, Diggy Simmons does not care what he does. Plus, from a lyrical standpoint, Diggy Simmons feels as if he can hold his own against J. Cole.
