On The Rise: Young North America

Young North AmericaBy Carlos Cureno
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

On a near-daily basis, more stars are emerging in Toronto, which has become a hip hop hotbed. Among the up-and-coming talents is Young North America, a popular duo. In order to grow their product, the two have made a name for themselves in Los Angeles, too.

Young North America is putting in work and their “Fast Lane” music video is doing massive numbers. Outside of the video, they have two successful mixtapes out. Going with the flow, Young North America is spending time pushing their current products.

Recently, Young North America spoke to Hip Hop Vibe in our latest edition of On The Rise. In their interview, they opened up about their journey to stardom. How they are reaching success is definitely a story worth paying attention to.

Read the entire interview below:

Currently, Toronto is the new focus of the hip hop world, how do you two feel you separate yourselves from the pack? We bring a sound that drives people. High energy, cinematic and dope would best describe what we do as artists. Toronto’s on a lil wave right now n we’re trying to take it to that next level. We try to maintain a certain quality when it comes to anything we put out, whether its our self designed clothing or our cover artwork we always strive for high a quality product. Were always trying to change the game out here and do something different, I guess you can say we’re innovative in anything that we focus on.

What inspired your run of new projects that began this past summer? Flash was working on his Young North America tape and we were all in the studio during the process so I guess it sparked the creativity. I mean its nothing new were always working, it was more so the fact that Flash was really putting in work on the project that got things going. Our work started to go through a more critical selection process this past summer. There’s almost sixty songs that were started, and only twenty made the two tapes.

Being the creators of your music, you guys are obviously the biggest critics, so can you explain what it is you believe fans like about your music? I think the versatility of our work is what attracts people to it. We can hit you with a dope trap record or hit you with a spaced out R&B track. It’s always something new to experience and not every song sounds the same which is what you sometimes hear from artists these days. The bass bumps the bars are fire what more do you want?

In only a few days, your music video for “Fast Lane” is up to close to 10,000 YouTube views, how are you getting your music out there? Yea that’s crazy that it’s doing numbers like that, we knew we had something dope, just didn’t think it would go up that fast. We’ve traveled south of the border in the last couple months so we’ve done a lot of networking with well connected people. Also the internet is a huge tool and were definitely making use of our social media outlets as well as a PR company out in LA.

As independent artists, what is the one thing an indie must do in order to be taken seriously in the music industry? To be honest, just invest in yourself. Nobody is gonna help you unless you help yourself first. Just make sure your work ethic is very high because not everybody is gonna stick around for the grind. If you really have a passion for what you do you will get there, its all in the work. You can’t cheat the grind man it won’t give you anything you haven’t worked for.

You guys already have two mixtapes out, when should fans expect the third? There’s no set dates or anything, but it’s already in the works. Like we said, the selection process is very critical so it all depends on how we feel about the project when the tracks are all laid out. There will be singles dropped in the meantime so definitely look out for those on the website.
