Communities In Schools (CIS) began in the early 1970s with a simple mission – to keep kids in school and reduce dropout rates. Through tremendous support from President Jimmy Carter and every president since that time, the Atlanta chapter has become the national model for 163 local affiliates in 26 states throughout the United States and the District of Columbia, helping more than 1.6 million children from low income families graduate from high school. In 2018, CIS of Atlanta was recognized by United Way of Greater Atlanta with the Community Impact Award, citing the organization’s “above and beyond commitment to improving Child Well‐Being in this region.”
