Hip Hop Vibe’s Album of the Year 2014: ScHoolboy Q – “Oxymoron”

Well before he was too high-profile, ScHoolboy Q would tell anyone who listened that HE was the dopest member of TDE. This was certainly a lot to live up to once Kendrick Lamar was done, but ScHoolboy Q managed to do just that. He made his own mark with Oxymoron, released in February.

ScHoolboy Q initially had trouble finding a single to stick, but he had moderate success in 2013 with “Collard Greens” and “Man of the Year.” But, after the album release, ScHolboy Q had success with “Studio,” featuring BJ The Chicago Kid. The song became a summer anthem.

Although Oxymoron was ScHoolboy Q’s third studio album, it was his first on a major label. This album came through the deal he is under with Top Dawg Entertainment and Interscope Records. The album went on to spawn another single later this year, “Hell of a Night,” which is currently making its way through the industry.

Outside of the singles, Oxymoron came with some creative and powerful music. The Los Angeles emcee did what was necessary to let the mainstream world know what the cult fans already knew, ScHoolboy Q is more than just another one of the TDE members. With that, he dropped what most would consider the album of the year in 2014 and Hip Hop Vibe chose it because of the overall quality and the minimal mainstream appeal.

The album features appearances from Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, BJ The Chicago Kid, Tyler, The Creator, Kurupt, and Raekwon.
