HHV Artist of the Year: Cardi B

By Alyssa Debonair

Look, this is Cardi B’s world, and everyone else has just lived in it. Early in 2017, it looked like DJ Khaled would repeat his success, and he actually did, but Cardi B just outperformed him. The career years from Kendrick Lamar, Future, and French Montana were also impressive.

However, Cardi B out-hustled all of them, and had a bigger record than all of them. Never forget that she began 2017 as a “Love & Hip Hop” cast member. As soon as she wrapped the reunion show, Cardi B signed with Atlantic Records and dropped “Bodak Yellow.”

Cardi B, briefly, looked like she’d be drawn into the Remy Ma/Nicki drama, but she soon became a bigger star than them both. In the months, yes months, since then, Cardi B took over the game. The success of “Bodak Yellow,” alone was enough to boost her into historic company.

With “Bodak Yellow,” Cardi B became the first female rapper to top Billboard Hot 100, solo, since Lauryn Hill, back in 1998. Before the year closed, Cardi B dropped “Bartier Cardi,” featuring 21 Savage, which has already topped iTunes’ charts. Despite only blowing up in the summer, Cardi B dominated the year, and soon people forgot all about the “Mask Offs,” “HUMBLE.s,” “Wild Thoughts,” and even Jay-Z’s 4:44 comeback run.

Cardi B owned 2017 and 2018 looks to be an even bigger year for her. Off just two mixtapes, one of which that dropped this year, Cardi B makes even more history. She is the first HHV Artist of the Year to take the year’s top spot, without EVER releasing a new album, as all she has is GBMV2 to her name, in 2017, and her and Offset’s romance.
