2020 MTV VMAs Will Not Be Held Inside Barclays Center; Will Still Take Place Across Different Boroughs of NYC With Limited To No Audience

The 2020 MTV VMAs experience will be one like no other. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently revealed that the ceremony could take place inside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center if they followed COVID-19 safety protocols and could have “limited to no audience.” Performances would take place all over NYC’s boroughs as well.

Now, MTV has decided against being inside Barclays, according to Rolling Stone. Instead they will stick to the plan of performances going down in different boroughs with no audiences.

“The 2020 VMAs will be held on Sunday, August 30th and pay homage to the incredible resiliency of New York with several outdoor performances around the City with limited or no audience, adhering to all state and city guidelines,” said spokespersons for MTV and the Barclays Center in a joint statement.

“In close consultation with state and local health officials, it became clear at this time that outdoor performances with limited or no audience would be more feasible and safer than an indoor event. The VMAs will highlight the boroughs in an exciting show and return to Barclays Center in 2021.”

“MTV will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, state and local officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders to ensure the safety of all involved.”

The VMAs is set for August 30 as it will begin at 8pm ET. Ariana Grande & Lady Gaga have the most nominations at nine each. Billie Eilish and The Weeknd then come in at six. Two new categories were also added amid the pandemic with Best Music Video From Home and Best Quarantine Performance.
