Retired Major league baseball player Bobby Bonilla, has an arrangement that has caused the 57-year old to be one of the highest-paid baseball players in 2020. To be exact, $1.2 million per year for 25 years is a very nice paycheck and it is trending at this time because the direct deposit hits on the 1st of July. Every. Single. Year.

Bonilla’s deal with the New York Mets for $29 million over five years was the richest in the majors when he signed all the way back in ’91. At one point Bobby Bonilla was obviously an All-Star for the Mets and unlike many athletes, he wanted to be sure that he had money after his career was over in baseball. His contract was a restructured deal that called for a portion of his salary in each of his final two seasons to be deferred. When the third baseman was released from the Mets after his season in 1999, he received a second deferral and this is the one that boosted his 2020 pay to seven figures. Factually speaking, baseball is the highest paid sport in the country, so just imagine that your big payday that comes around each year becomes known to those throughout the sport as “Bonilla Day.”

“I was just always thankful for the opportunity to play. There’s never a day that goes by that I’m not thankful for having the privilege to play professional baseball. I had a blast playing.”

“My advice to young players is to surround yourself with the right people.”

The last time Bonilla played for the Mets was in 1999 and he last played in the majors for the Cardinals in 2001, but will be paid through 2035, when he will be celebrating his 72nd birthday.

Happy Bonilla Day!

The true definition of getting the bag.
