George Floyd’s memorial service took place in Minneapolis yesterday, the city where he was killed by four city police officers on May 25. Derek Chauvin was the one who had his knee on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. His third-degree murder charge has since been upgraded to second and the three other cops have been charged in helping him murder Floyd as well. The Minneapolis service also featured celebrities in attendance such as T.I., Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart, and more as Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy.
Floyd will have another memorial service in Raeford, NC this weekend and two more in his hometown of Houston next week. The GoFundMe page for the George Floyd Memorial Fund has also been receiving an overwhelming amount of support. According to TMZ, it has broken the record for the most amount of donations at $13 million. It is currently over the $13,200,000 mark.
125 countries have already donated as well in support of Floyd. His brother, Philonise, says that the funds will go towards funeral and burial costs, counseling, lodging and travel for court proceedings, and assistance in general for the Floyd family. The arrests and charges towards all of the officers are a great start in the road for justice but we need convictions and long prison sentences too. The system has failed Black people in America in this situation way too many times.
