The coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to be a serious pandemic in the world as people continue to practice social distancing and staying home as much as possible to prevent it from spreading. The virus has been a problem in jails/prisons lately as well as inmates have been subjected to it. Tekashi 6ix9ine was released this week due to fear of catching the virus after his recent asthma problems and YNW Melly may soon be released after he tested positive.

Jay Z, Meek Mill, Van Jones, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and Philadelphia 76ers Co-owner Michael Rubin are among the founders of the REFORM Alliance which helps to bring criminal justice reform. Their efforts continue to make a difference as they have now donated 100,000 masks to correctional facilities to help inmates in the fight against the virus, according to CBS News. 40,000 masks are going to the Tennessee Department of Corrections, 5,000 masks are headed to Parchman, 50,000 go to Rikers, and 2,500 to one of Rikers’ medical facilities.

New York City and Tennessee correctional facilities don’t have enough supplies as in NYC, 231 inmates and 223 staff members have been infected.

“It’s a very vulnerable population,” said REFORM’s Chief Advocacy Officer Jessica Jackson to CBS News. “We’re really worried about the number of people coming in and out of the facility, and the fact that the people living there might be sitting ducks during this pandemic. Overwhelmingly the response was, ‘please provide the masks, we really need them.’ They want to protect the people working and living in the facilities. I think Rikers Island especially, they are very aware the virus has hit and so many lives are now at risk.”

Salute to REFORM for continuing to make a difference in lives. Prisons are starting to get hit hard by COVID-19 and these masks are essential for protection from it.
